Jeremiah 31:18-20

“I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me like an unruly calf, and I have been disciplined. Restore me, and I will return, because you are the Lord my God. After I strayed, I repented; after I came to understand, I beat my breast. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’  Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child in whom I delight? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,” declares the Lord.

I love this picture of an “unruly calf” that has strayed and returned… a prodigal who has recognized the Lord’s discipline, understood why it was necessary and has come to full repentance.

I believe that it will happen for each of our prodigals. Some might take a little longer than others, but be patient, believing confidently that they will get there.

The thought of God yearning for and having compassion on this “unruly” one makes me smile. My faith grows as I think of the value my prodigal has to the Father. Just as we parents discipline our children in love, God does the same.
